Alpha Chapter, Inc., the charter chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated ® was organized on October 16, 1932 at Freedman’s Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, DC. Since its inception, the chapter has supported the objectives of the national body and has implemented programs related to cancer, heart disease, and community wellness. Additionally, the chapter promotes educational achievement of its members and potential nurses by providing financial assistance through scholarships for nursing students. Programs that foster community wellness hold a significant role in the chapter’s community service activities especially those that impact vulnerable citizens such as children and the elderly. Past and current projects include:
• Chi Child Care Center
• The posthumous induction of Mary Eliza Mahoney, America’s first black professional nurse, as an honorary member of the Sorority.
• Friends to Friends International Project which supports health care services for 800 orphan children living in Kenya, Africa affected by the AIDS epidemic.
• Partnered with SOME (So Others Might Eat) to provide Easter baskets and Christmas boxes to children living in homeless shelters.
• Partnered with St. Thomas More Catholic Church to provide Christmas toys and clothing for children in Ward 8. • Provided blood pressure screenings and healthy education to seniors with Terrific, Inc.
• Partnered with HEALTHPACT to provided blood pressure screenings and health education throughout Washington, DC.
• Partnered with the Metropolitan Police Department to provide health information to residents of DC.
• Partnered with Made to Save to provide COVID-19 education to members of Wards 7 and 8.
The chapter sponsors two undergraduate chapters in Washington, DC: Alpha Delta Beta at Howard University and Alpha Gamma Beta at the University of the District of Columbia.
